RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre

Admission charges: Adult £2.50, Child (under 16) Free

The RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre tells the history and stories of North Norfolk's only USAF atomic base

It was once the largest and most strategically important American airbase and home to 10,000 personnel.
For over a decade it was the atomic deterrent against the Soviet Union.

After Sculthorpe was converted to a VHB base during the years of 1944 to 1946, a special and unique feature was added under a shroud of secrecy...……...Atomic loading pits. These pits and infrastructure are the first known Atomic sites for USAF in the UK and follow on from the same design as the ones constructed on the Tinian Isle in which B-29s, Enola gay and Bockscar ended the 2nd world war.
Very little is known about the early years of the American Atomic deterrent in the UK, However the RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre have researched a large amount of information about these secretive times. Their archive is available via email request.

The Heritage Centre has informative displays and artifacts from other important events at RAF Sculthorpe, most notably Operation Jiu Jitsu - daring Anglo American overflights of Soviet long range bomber bases early in the Cold War, and the involvement of RAF Sculthorpe’s USAF personnel in Britains worst natural disaster, the 1953 tidal floods, that saw the 47th Bombardment Wing awarded a silver pheasant from the people of Norfolk. It also has the UKs only wreckage of a B29 on display in addition to the remains of a Douglas DB-66 Destroyer.

Housed in the old Chapel building the Heritage Centre is accessible to all, with light refreshments and snacks available at the AYA Cafe. Dogs are welcome, but please clean up after your pooch.
