The West Norfolk Aviation Society
“Fascinated by anything mechanical that can leave the ground”
An introduction to the Society
Formed in 1991 by the students at the end of an Adult Education course at Methwold High School on Airfield History, the Society began a programme of monthly meetings on aviation related topics. During the first year we visited the Newark Air Museum, the Mosquito Museum at Salisbury Hall and the Aces High Museum at North Weald. Amongst the speakers were Derek Edwards who gave a presentation based on Aerial Photography in Norfolk and S/L Crowley who discussed the First Gulf War.
In 1993 a visit to Coventry Airport allowed members to enjoy a nostalgic flight over the Midlands in an Air Atlantique Dakota we had chartered.
More recently, members have been to Bruntingthorpe, tried gliding in Suffolk and toured the hangars at RAF Marham. Talks and presentations have covered Human Powered Flight, Auto Gyros by Wing Cmdr Ken Wallis (who was our Honorary President), Foot-Launched Powered Aircraft, Aircraft Accident Investigations and The Russian Air Force.
